If there's a key word for systems thinkers like us who like to build safe and secure systems, it's 'sustainability'. Sustainability is the ability to maintain a given thing at a reasonable or healthy level, it's what keeps a good thing rolling, year after year – regardless of the system and it's features. When we're talking about keeping a business cyber secure, sustainability is the aim of the game; our controls need to make sense and be effective proportionately to our risk appetite, our resourcing ought to not stretch us too thin, and most importantly, we need to produce a team culture that people feel comfortable to do their best work in.

Zooming out a little, the real truth is that there's a system to secure that takes priority – and that's the Earth system. Our planet is a fixed and finite resource that is affected by industry in a feedback loop that is currently completely unsustainable. Deforestation, over farming, and over extraction of natural resources to produce unnecessary products are all symptoms of a big broken system. The impacts aren't abstract either: The climate crisis is going to affect animals, infrastructure, seasonal climate, and most importantly: human lives.
